Price per kg of CO₂ mitigation
Enhanced rock weathering (ERW) accelerates the natural process of weathering, wherein CO₂ in rainwater and soil moisture reacts with basalt surface area, resulting in long-term storage as solid bicarbonate ions for over 100,000 years.
UNDO's operational strategy focuses on efficiently sourcing, transporting, and distributing basalt. This involves procuring crushed basalt rock, sourced as a by-product of mining and quarrying, thereby avoiding additional emissions. Furthermore, UNDO rigorously tests all new basalt sources to ensure trace metal levels are well below any agricultural thresholds.
A strong network to farmers distribute the basalt on their land. This enhances the soil quality and in turn makes for a better yield.
Although other silicates may have potentially faster weathering rates, UNDO favours basalt for ERW due to its projected 20-year weathering timeline and significant soil health benefits. Basalt's widespread availability worldwide positions it as the optimal choice for scaling ERW to meet UNDO's billion-tonne targets by 2050.
