This project protects and promotes the regeneration of over 11,000 ha of native forest.

Project highlights

  • The regenerated forest sequesters carbon to mitigate climate change.
  • This habitat delivers important ecosystem services and promotes biodiversity.
  • The project supports infrastructure upgrades and feral animal management.

About

The project area is comprised of 11,984 ha of land protected from deforestation and 11,094 ha of land where regeneration of native forest is promoted.

The owners of the property have been using income from the project in the following ways:

  • Agriculture operations and essential equipment purchases.
  • Delivering funding for infrastructure improvements such as fencing, yards, and catching facilities.
  • Bringing in contractors to complete firebreak grading around the entire perimeter of Kaleno.
  • Employing locals to do the manual labour the owners can no longer manage as they age.

Over the course of the projects at Kaleno, improved management practices have lead to a reduction in feral goat numbers, which in turn has improved the health of woody weeds and maintenance of good native ground cover.

The owners have taken their learnings to a run-down property purchased more recently in Western Australia where they will begin a new carbon project and use money from the Kaleno projects to kick-start the improvements.
