Price per kg of CO₂ mitigation

Cattle Flat Station in New Zealand has successfully regenerated native vegetation on its land through a combination of natural seeding, pest control, and protected areas. This has led to increased biodiversity, improved soil health, and reduced erosion.

Project highlights

  • Improved protection from storm surges and other coastal hazards for communities and coastal infrastructure
  • Intertidal wetlands provide a fertile ground for sequestering and storing vast amounts of atmospheric carbon
  • Significant increase in spawning places for fishes, shrimps and other marine life

About

Cattle Flat Station, located in northern Southland, is a large farm that has been actively involved in native vegetation regeneration. Despite being primarily used for farming, the station has natural seed sources from neighboring protected areas that have spread to less accessible parts of the farm. Additionally, extensive pest control measures and the management of natural forested areas have created a favorable environment for native plants to regenerate.

Currently, over 400 hectares of the farm are covered by regenerating native forests. This not only helps restore the land to its original state but also provides additional income for the landowner through biodiversity-related activities. The regenerating bush country covers rugged mountain landscapes and follows the Matarua River, contributing to biodiversity, erosion control, and clean waterways in the surrounding area.
