This route is all about exploring the stunning bays, beaches and coves of sub-tropical Northland.

“This was such an amazing route. It gives you the chance to explore some awesome, wild places along the way. We did this over a long weekend, but it’s the kind of trip you could easily stretch out over a week.

We started in Whangārei and followed the side roads out to the heads up the coast weaving up to Russell for the night. From there, we followed SH 10 north – it’s really scenic and there’s loads of stunning bays and beaches to stop off at as you go the way – before heading up to the Cape for the final stretch.”

• Wander out through the dunes overlooking Great Exhibition Bay
