“What role tech can play in a greener future?”
13 June, 2022
Enviro-tech company CarbonClick has been chosen as a New Zealand delegate to London Tech Week. CEO Dave Rouse will speak at the ‘Global Leaders Innovation Summit’, being held on Monday 13 June as part of London Tech Week.
Rouse says the event provides an important and potentially transformative platform to raise awareness and ignite the conversation around the energy demands and the opportunities within the tech sector to help reverse the current climate predicament we find ourselves in. While the tech sector and the digital world are demanding more and more power, Rouse is confident in showing how the “climate catastrophe” can be mitigated. Doing this requires “Challenging current practices and making way for those that allow greater consideration for the environment,” says Rouse.
Citing Web3, which is the digital frontier for cryptocurrency, IoT ecosystems, the metaverse, and the rise of non-fungible tokens (NFTs), Rouse will address the need for technology leaders to adopt core energy-efficient processes to help reduce power consumption and thereby the carbon emissions from digital growth. Rouse keenly advocates a focus on renewable energy as an optimal solution to neutralise increased demand. Furthermore, Rouse points out nature-based solutions supported through carbon offsetting to go further in repairing the historic and ongoing impact the tech sector has on our environment.
Rouse hopes to share the overarching message that digital growth, including the domain of Web3, has a significant energy cost and therefore carbon footprint. The ultimate challenge for technology leaders lies in sustainable designs. That means considering the energy requirements as part of the design process, from code to chips to data centre communications and making energy efficiency an integral part of the design process and then complementing this with carbon offsetting.
Engaging and being part of the climate solution as the world labours toward a net-zero goal, Rouse holds fast that a globally concerted effort with reforestation and avoided deforestation could put the brake on climate change and possibly even reverse it.
CarbonClick has earned its place as a global leader in delivering high-trust, carbon offset programmes to a diverse range of industry sectors. CarbonClick works with over 1,000 brands across airlines, online retail and the next major phase in the internet, Web3. Most recently, the company was awarded B Corp certification.
